Best known as Clair Huxtable from "The Cosby Show," and the first black actress to win a Tony for a dramatic leading role, Rashad is a committed advocate for children, women's issues, and fine arts.

Phylicia Rashad is best known for her role as Ruth Lucas on the CBS Sitcom Cosby and as Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show. She received the NAACP Image Award for "Best Actress in a Comedy Series" for both these roles. She has also been nominated for two Emmy awards and has won the People's Choice Award.
 
In addition to film and Broadway roles, Rashad is an active participant in charitable and non-profit organizations, including serving on the board of RNT and giving her support to Washington DC's children's hospital. A native of Houston, Texas, she graduated magna cum laude from Howard University and has received honorary doctorates from Providence College, Morris Brown College, and Clark Atlanta University.
