Three-time Olympian Matt Biondi has been a research associate with HWRF since 1994, collecting video footage and written documentation of humpback behavior and contributing to fundraising and public awareness efforts. Since 1987 he has made frequent public presentations to Fortune 500 companies, schools and community groups about marine mammal research and motivational subjects. He is the winner of eleven Olympic medals (including eight gold) and set twelve world records before retiring from competitive swimming in 1992.
In 1989 Biondi co-founded the Delphys Foundation (with which he continues to be active), a nonprofit organization that supports marine mammal research and education and studies interactions between proficient human swimmers and free-swimming wild dolphins. He costarred in the CBS special "Dolphins, Whales and Us," hosted two educational programs developed by the Delphys Foundation, and campaigned for consumer awareness and dolphin-safe tuna with Humane Society in 1989. He graduated from UC Berkeley with emphasis on conservation of natural resources. He has a strong, ongoing interest in helping children and takes an active role in environmental issue.
