He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine, a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, a fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, and a fellow of the American College of Phlebology. He graduated in 1978 from the University of California, Berkeley with an AB degree in Biophysics, received an M.D. degree in 1982 from the University of California, San Diego, and completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Hawaii. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at Georgetown University, George Washington University, and the Maryland Shock-Trauma Institute, a fellowship in toxicology informatics at the National Capital Poison Center (Georgetown University), and received special training in hyperbaric medicine at the Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach, California. He was a member of the faculty at George Washington University from 1985 until 1995.

Dr. Feied was a co-founder of the Informatics Section of the American College of Emergency Medicine and a founding chief editor of the E-Medicine online textbook. He was the first emergency physician in the United States to hold a position as Director of Informatics, and first to head an institute of medical informatics. He was Founding Director of the ER One Institutes for Innovation in Medicine in Washington, DC, which includes the Institute for Medical Informatics, the Institute for Public Health and Emergency Readiness, the Center for Biologic Counterterrorism and Emerging Diseases, the Medical Media Lab, the Simulation and Training Environment Lab, the Institute for Nursing Innovation, and the ER One Design Institute. Over the past three decades Dr. Feied has directed more than 100 technology projects in the area of medical informatics. He has published many articles and textbook chapters in the areas of biomedical informatics as well as in Emergency Medicine and venous thromboembolic disease. He is co-author of a comprehensive textbook of venous medicine. He has directed many systems development projects and has presented hundreds of invited lectures on topics related to medical informatics, technology and medicine, thromboembolic disease, and other related fields. He has lectured at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (EED) on technology and healthcare, and at the Harvard Business School on the role of informatics in the service of innovation and change. While at the Institute for Medical Informatics, Dr. Feied developed a unique practical software architecture ("Azyxxi") for the rapid integration, organization, display, and mining of all data present in any medical setting—including data from all legacy systems, across many regions—in real time. In 2006 the Azyxxi system was acquired by Microsoft Corporation as the enterprise core of a new Health Solutions Group, and in 2008 the system was renamed "Amalga." Dr. Feied's work with technology and medical informatics has been featured on national television (NBC nightly news, CNN, CBS, MSNBC); in publications such as Business 2.0 (eBusinessNow) and Healthcare Informatics; and in many newspapers including the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. His work has been the subject of a series of five Harvard Business School case studies. In 1994 Dr. Feied was honored by the King of Morocco with a medal of recognition for distinguished contribution to international development in medical research, and in 2001 his systems development work was honored with a Computerworld Smithsonian Award for Innovation. In 1997 he was admitted to the Cosmos Club in the category of Meritorious Original Work. In 2003 he received the Informatics Leadership Achievement Award of the American College of Emergency Physicians. In 2005 his Federal Project ER One received an architectural design award of excellence from Modern Healthcare, and his informatics work was recognized by Microsoft with an award as Microsoft Physician of the Year. He serves as Finance Chair for the American Medical Informatics Association, and is immediate past Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians Informatics Section, Past President of the American College of Phlebology, and Past President of The Historic George Town Club in Washington DC. He has served as Chairman of the Board of the National Capital Area Regional Health Information Organization (NCA-RHIO) and as Director of the National Center for Emergency Medicine Informatics.
