
As a former First Lady, she had a unique opportunity to make a difference in the public eye during her husband's service as Vice President and President of the United States. Throughout her years in public life and since leaving the White House in 1993, she has volunteered in, and supported, hundreds of charitable and humanitarian causes.
Her number one cause continues to be family literacy. A firm believer that society's problems could be solved if more people could read, write and comprehend, she helped develop the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 1990.
