Ambassador Anwarul K Chowdhury remains highly active as an advocate and distinguished lecturer in world affairs and is regarded as one of this century's most distinguished diplomats. Ambassador Choudhury has a lengthy and distinguished career of diplomatic service for Bangladesh and executive work for the United Nations. He is the former UN Undersecretary General and High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, a position he was appointed to in 2002 by the UN Secretary General.
This past December, Ambassador Chowdhury was designated as Secretary General of the International ten-year review of the Barbados Program of Action for the Sustainable Development of Developing States, to be held in Mauritius January 10-13th, 2005. He has also been designated the Secretary General of the International Ministerial Conference of Landlocked and Developing Countries and the Donor Community on Transit Transport Cooperation held in Alma, Kazakhstan in August of 2003.

As a graduate of the University of Dhaka, with an MA in Contemporary History and International Relations, Ambassador Chowdhury began his United Nations career with the successful negotiation of Bangladesh’s membership to the UN in the early 1970’s. During the 1980’s and 1990’s he was the Coordinator for the Least Developed Countries. From 1990-1993, he served as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Director for Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to his ambassadorial assignments for Chile, Nicaragua, Peru, Venezuela, the Bahamas and Guyana, he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations from 1996-2001. During this time he was twice appointed President of the Security Council, twice as president of the Executive Board of UNICEF, and twice as the Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council of the UN.
